DAF Collapse Awareness and Community Survey Report

February 28, 2022 0 comments Article research report, resource dorian

During the second half of 2021, about 60 DAF participants responded to the “DAF Collapse Awareness and Community Survey,” designed by Wendy Freeman and Dorian Cavé as part of their action research project. The survey aimed to explore such topics as:

  • How do we, DAF, envision societal collapse?
  • What affective responses occur in us as we do so?
  • Is DAF useful to our learning about this topic, and our emotional processing?
  • How does collapse-anticipation affect how we live our lives?
  • Why do we participate in DAF? Do we experience a sense of community together?

The very rich responses to this survey were analysed, and compiled into this report.
Among the main findings, Wendy and Dorian found that:

  • A majority of respondents consider that collapse has (either likely, or inevitably) already started, and that it is a phenomenon affecting the entire world.
  • Affective responses to this topic include a wide array of emotions. While fear and grief are very present, so are anger, love and empathy, and the appreciation of the present moment.
  • DAF has been a source of deeper understanding for engagement, as well as a source of relief and acceptance, for most respondents.
  • Many of us have enacted changes in our lives as a result of our collapse-awareness, or are taking steps in that direction.
  • Finding a sense of community and belonging, being well informed, and being of service to others were predominant reasons for engaging in DAF – although people’s priorities vary depending on their degree of active participation in the network.
